Applications need to be submitted soon for a free film-making workshop being offered in Anchorage next week for up to 20 Alaska Native and Native American youth.

The workshop will involve editing oral history accounts of healing from the personal traumas and cultural disruption caused by removing children from their villages and sending them to boarding schools where the use of their Native languages was forbidden. In a six-day process, participants will work with professional Native American filmmakers in Anchorage to complete film productions. The workshop is sponsored by the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition and the First Alaskans Institute.

The workshop is open to youth ages 12 to 24 and the productions will become part of the “Healing Voices story collection.”
