Judicial Council Taking Public Input Before Nominating Bethel Superior Court Judge

On Monday, the Alaska Judicial Council will nominate a new Bethel Superior Court judge, but first it wants to hear from the public about the applicants. Whoever is selected will replace Judge Charles Ray once he retires in the spring.

Six Alaska attorneys and judges have applied: Brooke Browning Alowa, Romano DiBenedetto, Andrew Grannik, Tara Logsdon, Nathaniel Peters, and Bride Seifert.

Nathaniel Peters is the only applicant who already lives in Bethel. He currently serves as a District Court judge.

At the Bethel courthouse from noon to about 1 p.m., the community can comment on the applicants and on the state of Bethel’s justice system to share what’s working, what’s not, and what qualities the council should look for in a nominee. For instance, if you if want a judge who is tough on a certain thing and understands something particular about the community, the council wants to hear that. The council will not hear problems with people’s particular cases unless they involve one of the applicants.

Around 4 p.m. the council will publicly vote on two candidates before passing those nominations to the Governor, who will select one of those nominees in mid-February to serve in the position.

The annual salary of a Bethel Superior Court judge is $239,724.

Update: Joan Wilson has removed her application for Bethel Superior Court judge.
