There’s a fishing opening Saturday, July 1 on the Kuskokwim River and then another one on Monday, July 3.

On Saturday, the river will open to gillnets for six hours, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., from the mouth of the Kuskokwim to about 10 miles above Upper Kalskag.

Below Upper Kalskag there are significantly more chum and red salmon than kings in the water. Above the village, the difference isn’t as dramatic, and federal managers are keeping the area closed to keep high numbers of kings from being harvested during this low king salmon run.

But conditions are expected to change by Monday. Federal managers predict that by then the chum and reds will have swum further upstream and will far outnumber the kings.

On Moday federal managers plan to open the Kuskokwim from the mouth to below the Aniak runway for 12-hours from noon to midnight.

Gillnets for both openings are restricted to six-inch or smaller mesh, no more than 45 meshes in depth and 25 fathoms in length.
