LKSD Students Competing In Speech Tournament For Chance To Perform At State

Students from across the Lower Kuskokwim School District are competing in a speech tournament this week for a chance to move on to State.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Bethel Regional High School is hosting 29 students from 10 schools for the Drama, Debate, and Forensics tournament. Contestants can speak in Yup’ik or English, but only the winners in the English competition will go on to the State Championship scheduled for February in Anchorage. There has not been a Yup’ik state competition hosted by the Alaska Native Oratory Society for a couple years.

Tournament categories include: humorous interpretation of a poem, dramatic interpretation of a poem, expository informational speaking, and original persuasive speaking.

Participating schools are Bethel Regional High School, Chefornak, Kipnuk, Kongiganak, Napaskiak, Nightmute, Quinhagak, Toksook Bay, Tuntutuliak, and Tununak.

Kasigluk’s Akiuk and Akula Schools could not attend because of a recent death in the village.
