Regional Advisory Council to Discuss Fisheries Proposals Next Week in Bethel

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Subsistence Regional Advisory Council will meet next week to discuss proposals affecting the Yukon and Kuskokwim River salmon fisheries.

The Council will discuss language changes to a federal jurisdiction provision that says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service may manage schedules, gear type, openings and closings, and restrictions independently.

The change, proposed by Lamont Albertson of Aniak, would read that these management decisions would be made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Federal Subsistence Program, including the Federal In-Season Manager, in consultation with appropriate agencies and entities. This would include entities like the newly created Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission.

The council will also hear reports from the 2016 salmon fishing season from state and federal managers, and other organizations.

Also in the agenda are several proposals for the Yukon River salmon fishery, including changes to gear types, allowing for early harvests, revisions to federal regulations and more.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Subsistence Regional Advisory Council will meet next Wednesday and Thursday at the Association of Village Council Presidents, Regional Housing Authority building in Bethel. Doors open at 9 a.m. on both days.
