Tununak Awarded Thousands Of Dollars For New Housing

Tununak has been awarded over $381,000 for new housing for public safety officers.

Tununak needs more law enforcement. But first, it needs somewhere to put them.

The village has been trying to recruit a new VPSO since 2016, but the low pay and the village's lack of safe, affordable housing has made the hiring process difficult. That might be about to change. In a press release Thursday, The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) announced its plan to fund a new, three-bedroom home in Tununak to house public safety professionals. The organization, which finances its projects with bonds, is donating over $381,000 to the village to fund the project.

AHFC says it expects the house to be completed by October of this year.
