Waterfowl nesting season has begun on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. To give the eggs time to hatch and the young birds a chance to grow, subsistence hunting for all waterfowl in the region will close, beginning Thursday.

The closure will last 30 days from May 25 to June 25, according to a press release from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The federal order comes from the Service in consultation with the Association of Village Council Presidents' Waterfowl Conservation Committee.

A hunting closure on black brant geese will remain in effect longer: through July 10. This closure should last from the time the eggs are laid until the young birds are fledged.

Correction: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has corrected their press release that this story was based off. An earlier version of the release said that both black brant and cackling Canada geese would be included in the extended closure through July 10. This information in incorrect. Only black brant geese will be included in the extended closure.
