YK Delta Teens Make Big Showing At Health Sciences ANSEP

Teenagers from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta are making a big showing this week in Anchorage. Twenty of the 50 middle school students attending the statewide Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program, or ANSEP, are from the Delta.

They come from Akiachak, Bethel, Hooper Bay, Kongiganak, Kotlik, Marshall, Pilot Station, Scammon Bay, and St. Mary’s.

During the five-day residential camp at the University of Alaska Anchorage, the students have been studying health sciences. They’ve explored a variety of hands-on activities from dental health simulations to a heart dissection, according to a press release from the program.

To be eligible, the students must have completed ANSEP’s Middle School Academy and have met other academic standards, like being on track to finish Algebra 1 before high school.

ANSEP offers the chance for students to advance their knowledge in the STEM fields - science, technology, engineering and math - while getting an idea of college life by living on the UAA campus and attending classes.
