The Lower Kuskokwim River from Bethel to Aniak will be a busy highway of mushing action this weekend. The K300 sled dog race starts Friday at 6:30 p.m. on the river in front of Bethel. It follows the start of the Bogus Creek 150 at 5 p.m. Then on Saturday, it’s the 65-mile Akiak Dash, starting at 2 p.m.
Finish times will depend on the weather, but it’s estimated that the Bogus 150 will finish Saturday morning, the Akiak Dash will finish Saturday evening, and the K300 will finish Sunday morning.
Although races don’t start until tomorrow, K300 action is already in full-swing. Last night was the annual benefit concert. Tonight are the mushers’ meetings and drawings for both the K300 and the Bogus Creek 150.
Unlike previous years, the K300 committee has decided not to hold the mushers’ drawing at the KYUK studios, so it cannot be broadcast live on the radio or on TV. However, if you happen to be in Bethel, you can stop by the Long House Inn where it will be going on tonight.
The mandatory mushers’ meetings for all 150 and K300 mushers is 4 p.m. today. The drawing for the K300 mushers-which decides the order they start the race-will be held at 6 p.m. That will be followed by the drawing for the Bogus Creek 150 drawing at 7 p.m.
Stay tuned to KYUK for race coverage all weekend long. We will be broadcasting the race starts live from the river starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday. KYUK also has reporters on the race trail at Tuluksak and Kalskag.
You can hear it all on KYUK 640 AM or keep visiting our website, kyuk.org. We’ll be streaming all the action here and posting updates and photos of the races too.
