Russian Mission man still missing, search on hold

by Mark Arehart on March 12, 2013

Officials with Bethel Search and Rescue say the search for Harvey Pitka of Russian Mission is on hold.

BSAR says the search is not cancelled and was postponed at the request of the Alaska State Troopers.

Pitka and Raymond Marth of Marshall became lost Wednesday on the trail to Marshall from Akichak.

On Sunday Marth reportedly made it to the village of Kalskag on foot. He reportedly suffered no injuries.

Marth said he and Pitka had been traveling on separate snowmachines and became separated sometime on Wednesday. Marth said he traveled eastward toward Russian Mission and his snowmachine ran out of gas early Friday morning. He then started to walk toward the lights of Kalskag.

BSAR found Pitka’s snowmachine on the Nunapitchuk Wood Trail to the Yukon River near Ohagamiut on Wednesday.

Other details are scarce. It is not known why the Alaska State Troopers have asked to postpone the search.
