A search and rescue ended successfully in Scammon Bay after a man spent the night out in the cold. On Dec. 10 Billy Tunutmoak of Scammon Bay walked out of the village alone. The 39-year-old was reportedly wearing only jeans and a coat. That evening, a search of the village was conducted but the man was not located.

The following day, the Village Public Safety Officer contacted the Alaska State Troopers and reported Tunutmoak missing. Local volunteer searchers followed a single set of foot tracks and eventually found Tunutmoak. According to Troopers, he was cold but uninjured. He had survived the night by building a makeshift shelter out of grass and brush.

Eight searchers and three four-wheelers were involved in the search effort.
