Searchers find missing Bethel man

Search volunteers from Bethel and Kwethluk found a missing Bethel man late this morning. They were looking for 35-year-old Corey Tolliver of Bethel, who went missing Sunday.

Tolliver had become separated from his camping party Sunday morning when they were returning to Bethel from the 3 Step Mountain area. He was last seen near the Columbia Creek area at about 9:30 a.m. When he didn’t show up to Bethel by 8 p.m., Alaska State Troopers were contacted.

Tolliver was fully equipped with survival gear including an arctic oven tent.

Bethel Search and Rescue coordinator, Peter Atchak, said he got a call from rescuers from a satellite phone just before noon today saying that they had found Tolliver near 3 Step. Atchak said he was in good health. Atchak said he did not yet know why Tolliver had gotten separated from his group.

Atchak added that travel conditions are not ideal now. He said there is a lot of sticky snow which can get snow machines stuck easily and it can also take more gas than some people plan for.

He said everyone should take survival gear with them when they head out on the trail.
