Search dogs to assist in search for missing men

by Ben Matheson on November 4, 2013

Searchers in Bethel, Eek and Tuntutuliak are returning today to the Kialik River after a weekend of rough weather that slowed efforts to find Nick Cooke of Bethel and James L. Napoka of Tuluksak.

Bethel Search and Rescue reports that a small crew was able to make it to the mouth of the river Sunday and drag the bottom. The bulk of the recovery efforts today will be on the river, but a team out of Eek will continue to track footprints. The first few days of recovery operations have not yielded any sign of the men.

Two specially trained teams of search dogs will arrive tomorrow and head to the scene. The dogs and their handlers work with Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs in Anchorage. They expect to return to Anchorage on Wednesday night.
