Several YK Delta teams compete in state tourney

It’s March Maddness, and that means the Alaska State Basketball Tournament is in full swing.

The Boy’s and Girl’s 1A state championship bracket started on Saturday with the Aniak Lady Halfbreads beating the Noorvik Lady Bears in a close contest 48-46.

Next up Aniak sees Koligenak in the quarterfinals at 7:00 tonight.

In another close contest, the Scammon Bay Lady Blackbirds lost to the Alak Lady Huskies 47-43 despite holding the lady Huskies to just 32% shooting.

Next up Scammon takes on Yakutat in the consolation bracket tonight at 8:45.

Also on Saturday, the Chefornak Lady Shawmans lost to Husila, 40-29.

Then just this afternoon the Lady Shawmans took on Golovin in the consolation bracket. Chefornak beat Golovin 43-42 on a shot with six seconds left in the ballgame.

In the Boy’s bracket on Saturday, the Scammon Bay Eagles beat Alak 53-51.

Saturday Toksook Bay Islanders beat Minto 64-55, but just lost this morning in the quarterfinals to King Cove, 65-51.

Next, Toksook plays in the consolation bracket at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.

The Russian Mission Raiders lost to Klawock Saturday, 75-36. Then in the consolation bracket this morning, they were beaten by Birchwood Christian 65-56.

Also on Saturday, the Aniak Halfbrees lost to Noorvik 65-59.

In 2A action the Hooper Bay Warriors dominated Su Valley today, 56-37.

In 3A action, the BRHS Warriors take on Seward high at 8 a.m. Thursday.
