A St. Marys man died Saturday in an ATV accident. Trooper spokesperson Megan Peters says 27-year-old Joe Bryan Joe was deceased at the scene. At about 5 a.m. Saturday morning, a village police office got word that an ATV had crashed about three miles outside town near the confluence of the confluence of the Andreafsky and Yukon Rivers.
“We believe that alcohol and also poor weather conditions are a factor in the collision. At the time of the collision, there was blowing snow, it was still dark out, and the visibility on the scene of the crash site was very limited,” said Peters.
Troopers believe Joe was the driver of the ATV. A passenger received minor injuries and was treated in St. Marys.
Joe’s body has been sent to Anchorage for an autopsy. As troopers investigate the accident, Peters says they hope to learn about what role alcohol might have played.
“The toxicology tests will come back and either confirm that or it or null it . But until we get that back, we’re not saying that somebody was [drinking], we’re saying that we’re looking at it and we’re looking at a possibility to it,” said Peters.
Next of kin has been notified.
