The community of Chevak in Southwest Alaska has been breathing a collective sigh of relief after the arrest of a man in July for the murder of Roxanne Smart. The 19-year-old was found stabbed to death in the middle of town last August. But  it was a tough year for the tight-knit Cup’ik community as they waited for law enforcement to make an arrest.

UPDATED: 8/14, 10:20 a.m. – Alaska State Troopers have released more information about their investigation into what happened with an emergency phone they believe came from pilot Seth Fairbanks after his Supercub crashed into Cook Inlet around midnight August 6th. Troopers launched an investigation into the initial call after receiving scrutiny about the timeline of the call and response, says Trooper Spokesperson Megan Peters.

A woman has died in Alakanuk after crashing an ATV into a shipping container.

Alaska State Troopers say 21-year-old Cecila Chikigak of Alakanuk was driving fast near the city office when she left the roadway, crashed, and was thrown from the ATV. Investigators say she died on impact. She was the only person involved. Read more →

It appears there was a delay when an emergency call came in from a plane crash on Knik Arm last week that is believed to have led to the deaths of two men from McGrath. Wednesday, the National Transportation Board released a preliminary report on their investigation into the crash. Alaska State Troopers are now trying figure out what went wrong with the 9-1-1 system.

A Scammon Bay man is charged with trying to import alcohol to the dry village. According to an Alaska State Trooper dispatch, Sunday around 1 p.m. Bethel Troopers received information that 27-year-old Brandon Eddie Nanuk of Scammon Bay was flying to Scammon with alcohol.

UPDATE – 7/26 11:15 a.m.: Alaska State Troopers say a Chevak man has admitted to killing Roxanne Smart last summer. The announcement was made Saturday through an online dispatch that they had arrested 20-year-old Samuel Atchak, of Chevak. Megan Peters, a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers says investigators were waiting on lab results.

A Tununak woman is under arrest after allegedly attempting to transport alcohol to the community. According to an Alaska State Trooper dispatch, members of the Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team caught Jessica Post trying to smuggle 12 bottles of R&R Canadian Whisky into the dry village.
