UPDATE – 7/26 11:15 a.m.: Alaska State Troopers say a Chevak man has admitted to killing Roxanne Smart last summer. The announcement was made Saturday through an online dispatch that they had arrested 20-year-old Samuel Atchak, of Chevak. Megan Peters, a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers says investigators were waiting on lab results.

A Tununak woman is under arrest after allegedly attempting to transport alcohol to the community. According to an Alaska State Trooper dispatch, members of the Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team caught Jessica Post trying to smuggle 12 bottles of R&R Canadian Whisky into the dry village.

A two-year-old boy was found dead in a creek in St. Mary’s Saturday. The boy’s mother reported to Alaska State Troopers the boy was missing Saturday afternoon.

Searchers have found the wreckage of the Yute Air plane that’s been missing since Saturday morning, but there’s still no word on the status of the pilot. Federal officials say in 2014 they intercepted nearly ten times as much heroin coming into Alaska than in 2013. The growing use of the drug is impacting urban and rural areas. This is the first in a series of three stories about the impacts of heroin in Bethel and how the community is fighting it. It begins with one woman’s struggle to get clean in Bethel.
