Bethel customers of the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative or AVEC took their first action as members of the co-op Thursday when they elected delegates. The member-owned nonprofit cooperative held its first Bethel member meeting since taking over last year.

After a week without power, the lights in Tuluksak came back on Friday evening. Peter Andrew is the Tribal Council President.

“Well, it feels good, the power’s back on, everyone feels good they have their power back on. The most important thing is getting their freezers cold,” said Andrew.

usdaA federal grant is providing energy audits for 42 YK Delta small businesses. Taz Tally is the grant manager for the United States Department of Agriculture funds received by the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative. He says the audits include a return-on-investment breakdown of where companies can see the biggest improvements.

As of midnight last night, Bethel residents are customers of the Alaska Village Electric Coop, or AVEC. The cooperative signed the final papers to take over for Bethel Utilities Corporation Tuesday.
