For a team with a history of winning the Alaska State Wrestling Championship a second place team finish might not seem quite as thrilling as winning the title. But, the championship round this year was an incredible one for the Warrior team.

The Bethel Warriors boys and girls basketball teams placed second at the Holland America Tournament in Sitka over the weekend. Both teams fell to Sikta in the final game.

The boys and girls varsity basketball teams from Bethel Regional High School wrapped up their tournament action on Saturday evening against the Nanooks of Nome.

The Lady Warriors were first up on the court, and they jumped out to a dominating first half lead of 20 to 5. The Lady Nanooks would claw their way back into the game and would close that gap to 6 points at one point in the third quarter. The Lady Warriors would eventually stretch the lead back out and would finish with a 38-22 victory.

20120111 warriorThe Bethel Warrior wrestlers defeated the team from Seward last night, 65 to 15.

The Warriors saw victories by Tristen Evan at 106, Gage Hoffman at 120, and Brandon Evans at 126. 132-pounder Aaron Olsen, along with Aaron Greenwood at 138 and Sven Williams at 145 came out on top.

There were more victories at 160 with Lorenzo Chavez, Patrick Francisco at 170, and Michael Bialy at 285. There were several forfeits as well.

Several teams from the Y-K Delta begin wrestling in Bethel’s tournament at 6 pm Friday. Wrestling continues at 9 am on Saturday with finals at 3 pm. KYUK will broadcast the action from the finals on Saturday.

Warriors coverage on KYUK Thursday

Your Bethel Warriors basketball teams emerged victorious after the first round of the Western Alaska 3a Conference Championship Tournament yesterday.

Today, Thursday March 3rd,  KYUK will broadcast both Warriors games in the semi-finals. At 1 pm your Warrior boys take on Nome. At 8 pm tonight, your Lady Warriors battle the Lady Huskies of Kotzebue.
