The next Iditarod Sled Dog Race is months away, but it’s already on the minds of three local mushers: Pete Kaiser of Bethel, Mike Williams Sr. and Mike Williams Jr. of Akiak. The three signed up to compete in the 2013 race during the first day of sign-ups June 30.
The three mushers are veterans. Pete Kaiser and Mike Williams Jr. placed well in the Iditarod the last three years. Last year, they took 5th and 8th place respectively.
Mike Williams Sr. will run his 15th race. His best finish was in 1997 when he placed 18th. He is a well known musher, mushing for the cause of Sobriety since 1992.
The Iditarod is the longest sled dog race in the world. It runs from Anchorage to Nome, approximately 1,100 miles.
