The Toksook Bay Islanders will be heading to state after denying the Chefornak boys a second conference title. The Islanders defeated the defending champion Shamans in a narrow game 47 to 38 that remained close until the final minute.

The Coastal Conference championship game between the two coastal teams was a repeat of the 2011 final, which Toksook Bay also won. This time it was with a much younger team on the court for the Islanders. Mathew Pitka, a junior, was the oldest player suited up for Toksook Bay. He led their scoring effort with 13 points. He was supported by sophomores like Noah Charles and freshman like Byron Nicolai who each contributed 9 points.

Chefornak was led by their big man, senior Ryan Erik, who tallied 12 points. Jeffery Agimuk chipped in with 9 points. Others on the Chefornak team struggled to knock down their buckets in the face of a quick and tenacious Islander defense.

The Coastal Conference includes all the village schools of the Lower Kuskokwim School District, it’s one of the largest conferences in the state. Only the Coastal Conference champion advances to the state tournament.

The 1A Alaska State Basketball Tournament begins Saturday, March 16th. The championship game is on Wednesday, March 20th.
