Two pedestrians were hit by vehicles in Bethel and one was life-flighted to Anchorage with serious injuries. They have been identified as 41-year-old Marie Bebe-Waska and 46-year-old Wassillie Gregory.
It was about 6 p.m., Friday (Oct. 2) when the two attempted to cross the Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway in front of the cultural center and were struck by separate vehicles, a truck and a SUV.
Medics and police responded to the scene. Both Waska and Wassillie were injured and taken to the Bethel hospital. Waska was then life flighted to Anchorage and remains in serious condition. Wassillie is in stable condition in Bethel.
Bethel police have talked to witnesses and are continuing to investigate. They believe that the pedestrians had been drinking and tried to cross the road in heavy traffic. Police say alcohol was NOT a factor with the drivers.
