About 600 young athletes from school districts around Alaska are gathered in Anchorage for the statewide Native Youth Olympics event, which started April 25. Two Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta athletes won their events in the first day of the meet.
Jaylen Moses from Akiachak with the Yupiit School District earned first place in the boys’ Wrist Carry. Moses topped the boys with 536 feet, 0.5 inches. Troy Umugak of Chevak took second at 504 feet and 6.5 inches.
In the boys’ Alaskan High Kick event, Jeremy Andrews from Kasigluk-Akula with the Lower Kuskokwim School District won with a kick of 90 inches. Archie Andrews of Emmonak with the Lower Yukon School District tied for second place with an athlete from Unalaska with a kick of 88 inches.
In the girls’ Alaskan High Kick event, Jessica David from Kongiganak with the Lower Kuskokwim School District took fourth place with 68 inches.
The NYO meet in Anchorage runs through Saturday.
