A large amount of illegal drugs heading to a Yukon River village was intercepted by law enforcement.
The Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team or WAANT unit, of the Alaska State Troopers, intercepted 9 ounces of marijuana from a person who was scheduled to travel to Saint Mary’s. The person has not been identified as charges are pending.
WAANT says that on Tuesday, the 8th, they received a tip about a young female about to smuggle a large amount of marijuana from Anchorage to Saint Mary’s.
Troopers say that acting on that tip, they contacted a 20-year old female as she checked in at one of the commercial air carriers at the Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage. A drug dog, WAANT K-9 “Duncan” positively identified the odor of illegal drugs coming from one of the female’s checked luggage.
A search warrant turned up nine ounces of marijuana, which had an approximate street value of twelve thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars ($12,750).
Troopers say a single charge of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance will be forwarded to the Anchorage District Attorney’s office.
