on Friday night both Bethel High School varsity basketball teams came away with blowout wins against the Raiders of Unalaska. The biggest concern heading into Saturday night’s games was whether or not the Warriors could keep their legs, and wits, about them after so many days of travel. Bethel laid those concerns to rest in both games.
Opposite of Friday’s schedule, the Lady Warriors opened up Saturday evening’s basketball action. The opening quarter was Unalaska’s strongest of the night, and they led 13-10 after the first stanza. That was essentially the last time the Lady Raiders would hold a lead, and Bethel took a 22-17 lead into the locker-room at halftime. As time progressed in the second-half the end result became more and more apparent. Bethel’s lead continued to grow steadily and they finished with a massive thirty-one point victory- 61 to 30. Bethel was led in scoring by Riana Joseph’s 17 points. The Lady Warriors next game is Friday, January 17th at home against Western Conference foe Barrow Whalers. KYUK 640AM will provide live coverage of that match-up.
Saturday’s nightcap got started interestingly, as the Warriors held only a three-point, 19 to 16, lead after the first-quarter buzzer. Most of the second-quarter was close; however, by the closing minutes of the half Bethel was able to score quickly on several possessions. The Warriors lead quickly grew to 17 by the end of the half, and Coach Cronk’s squad would take a 44-27 lead into the halftime break. Bethel’s ability to score in transition continued to plague the Raider defense all night long. The final buzzer would finally sound, and Bethel would finish off their road-trip with a 75-44 win. Bethel’s next game is Friday, January 17th at Barrow. KYUK will have live coverage available on 640AM.
