Students of Bethel Regional High School’s Advanced Composition class have resurrected the high school’s newspaper. The Warrior Weekly is now available every Thursday.

BRHS hasn’t had a school newspaper in four or five years, so English teacher Jennifer Mutch decided it was time to bring it back.

“I always wanted to do a newspaper,” Mutch said, “and I knew the kids didn’t have much, if any, experience doing this type of writing.”

She assigned students to cover everything from sports and happenings at the Junior High, to community news and events; it took off quickly.

“They decided what to call the paper; they came up with all the details,” said Mutch. “The credit is totally on them.”

Students will rotate from week to week, choosing what they cover. While Mutch edits the students' work, each story also goes through a peer editing process.

“When they do revising and editing, they’re all working on the same document so they can see what each other is doing and are giving each other feedback,” Mutch said.

Mutch was pleasantly surprised by some of topics students chose to cover.

“We wrote about the Valentine's Day sale that the Music department does, we wrote about the Yup’ik Dance Team. They wanted to do a shout out for the Teacher of the Week, an article. I thought that was neat,” said Mutch.

Mutch says that students outside of the class can contribute to The Warrior Weekly by contacting her.

“Their lives are important, what they’re doing is important,” said Mutch. “Their experiences are what’s going to make the paper successful.”

Stories planed for the next edition, which is expected to be out Thursday, include coverage of archery, Junior High Volleyball and Basketball, and an update on the progress of the new cafeteria.

Students on the Warrior Weekly staff include Martin Alexie-Leonard, Kyle Chung, Clevon Constantine, Hunter Crace, Anecia Evan, Gavin Ingvalson, Josh Martin, Lakeisha McCann, Travis Moses, Arianna Smith, and Moses Wiseman.
