At the Bethel City Council meeting tonight, members will discuss raising cab rates, a road project, and funding for new water and sewer trucks.

The proposal before Bethel City council would not raise cab fares in the city, which would remain $5 per person one way. However, the ride to and from the airport would go up from $7 to $8, and a one-way ride to Kasayulie Subdivision would climb from $10 to $12.

According to the city’s Public Safety and Transportation Commission, cab rates in Bethel have remained the same for the past decade, while expenses such as fuel, insurance, maintenance, taxes, and fees have all increased.

The city Administration is also eager to get the Tundra Ridge Road Realignment Project going, which looks to close the “donut hole” loop. There are two routes around H-Marker Lake under consideration. Tonight, Council will consider two items that will affect the project: one resolution stating that Council would support the proposed project, with most of the funds coming from state revenues, and a second which would allocate $20,000 to the Anchorage based DOWL Engineering firm to begin surveying for the project.

The administration is also looking for a go-ahead from the Council to apply for a little over half a million dollars in federal funds to purchase eight water trucks and seven sewer trucks. The funds would also be used for “construction of a new water and sewer pipe project between 6th and 7th Avenues.”

The Bethel City Council and the Administration are also making plans for their annual visit to Juneau for the Alaska Municipal League Winter Legislative Conference.
