Bethel Search and Rescue will get money for supplies, ONC will have "community wellness" meetings, the Fitness Center will have money to offer women's self-defense training at no charge, and the library will get some staffing. All of this because of action by Bethel City Council last night.

These are the first organizations to be awarded Community Action Grants funded by the city's tax on alcohol sales.

“I think this is a really good example, right here, of what the city is doing with that alcohol money,” said council member Mitchell Forbes. The grants total $28,300.

The four recipients include Friends of the Kuskokwim Consortium Library for $12,000 towards a Jesuit Volunteer Adult Service Coordinator; Bethel Search and Rescue for $10,000 to help cover fuel, oil, parts, batteries, and safety gear costs; ONC for $5,000 toward community wellness gatherings; and the Y-K Fitness Center for $1,300 to offer free women’s self-defense training.

The next filing period to apply for a Community Action Fund grant opens May 18 and closes on May 25.
