High Tides Bring Free Fish To Bethel

No time to fish? No problem. The green fish bin is back. Starting today, you can begin picking up fish harvested from the Bethel Test Fishery, operated by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

The fish are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. They will be placed in the familiar large, green bin with ADFG spray painted on its side. The bin is located by Brown’s Slough, near Corina’s Groceries.

Fish and Game deposits the fish after each high tide. The harvests help the state determine the size and makeup of the salmon running up the Kuskokwim.

Recently, the test fishery has been catching mostly chum salmon and reds, along with a few kings.

Prior to today, the Bethel ONC Tribe had been delivering the fish caught by the Test Fishery to local households and organizations, distributing mainly to elders.
